Story/ Plot
Well, honestly Grand Blue doesn't really have a plot since it is a slice of life comedy. It follows Iori Kitahara, who just entered university, as he spends his time drinking with his new friends, developing a new passion for diving and attending his classes (which are pretty rare and retarded). In my opinion, diving is the only real plot in the manga. Kitahara and his best friend, Kouhei Imamura, are forced to join the diving club by their senpais (drinking buddies), and throughout the chapters they learn the basics as well as the beauty of the activity. Readers don't need any prior knowledge of diving because everything is very well explained.
Although the plot is rather weak, it is enough to be used as a guideline for the comedy, which is where Grand Blue really shines. Seriously, I've never laughed so much before while reading other mangas. The interactions between the characters are always over-the-top and the situations they are in are ridiculous but that was what kept me reading this manga.
There is some fanservice, but it is justified since it is a manga about diving. The same can't be said about nudity, but that is not due to the female characters..
Characters
The characters in Grand Blue are all very interesting. Some are somewhat generic but they all grow on you pretty much the moment they are introduced. I'll talk about the main trio but just so you have an idea, there is a siscon, the naked drunk senpais, a bitch, a bimbo, etc... The thing is, even though their actions are always ridiculous, they fit the characters and are never cringy but rather hilarious.
Kitahara, Iori: the MC, as I said before, he enters in a university and moves to his uncle's house, which is a diving shop. We see him learning how to dive throughout the story. He starts as a rather calm guy, but his senpais make him retarded (in a funny way). He builds a kind of harem although it's relevance to the story is close to zero as there is almost no real romance.
Imamura, Kouhei: Kouhei is an otaku, who as a fetish for little sisters. His
dream is to have a harem full of high school girls. He is tricked into
entering the diving club by Kitahara.
Kotegawa,
Chisa: She is Kitahara's cousin. She is Kitahara and Kouhei's age and
also goes to the same university. Chisa is generally calm, but can
sometimes be a bit tsundere (I don't really like tsundere characters,
but in her case it wasn't a problem because it isn't exagerated). She
loves diving and is an instructor.
There
isn't much character development besides the diving. Kitahara slowly
starts liking diving and it's actually an interesting development.
Besides that, there is also the bonds created between the characters,
which are very well portrayed.
Art
The art is amazing. The underwater scenery is breathtaking because it's very detailed and beautiful. Also, the expressions of the characters are hilarious and make up half of the comedy.
Final thoughts
I recommend this manga to everyone, it'll definitely make you laugh. It doesn't have a great story, but the comedy is excellent and the characters are interesting.
